Spijker is named after the “stoetbul” (stud bull) of the late iconic South African wine celebrity Francis “Duimpie” Bayly. Duimpie, whose favorite hobby was cattle breeding, was our neighbour and a close family friend.

He was presented a bottle of the finished product and became very emotional. “I’ve been honoured many times in my life, but this is the first time I’ve been honoured with a bottle of wine,” he exclaimed, shocked and surprised.

Duimpie’s legend, as well as that of his bull Spijker, will now live on!

Professor Eben Archer, another close family friend and South African vineyard studies icon, influenced (Annelie) her decision to become a viticulturist. His influence on our wine industry has been enormous, and he has also had a significant impact on her life, for which she will be eternally grateful.

His favourite grape variety was Malbec, so it seemed natural to honour his legacy by using it as the driving force behind Spijker.

The grapes are sourced from the southern and northern slopes of the Bottelary Hills, and the Helderberg region, resulting in a wine of tremendous complexity.

The Spijker Malbec boasts aromas of cherries and tobacco and has a deep blood plum colour. The palate is smooth, with fine tannins, luscious red fruits and a gentle acidity. This wine does not require maturation; it is ready to drink and as smooth as silk.
